What three factors that day made the death toll from the blizzard so high?

Very high winds, producing snow drifts of 30 feet and more in some places. Ships were either sunk or grounded and caused the deaths of many seamen. Many people went outdoors during the storm and became lost and covered in the snow.

Earlier in that same year there was a blizzard in the Midwest. The children's Blizzard. Many children died in that blizzard as they were on their way home and were caught in it.
