The interaction between the two cultures are a very controversial topic here in Scandinavia. While most academics simply ignore the Sami culture existing, for example an article in a local newspaper (which I can't dig up now, sorry) stated that findings from 500 A.D. was left by a "hitherto unknown populace" - with what local south sami people said was clear indications of their ancestors bringing reindeer over the land.

Anyway, recent discussion in Norway about minorities dig up the possible influence in norse language made by sami people, such as long consonants in certain swedish and norwegian northern dialects (meanwhile Denmark has short)

However, I can't find any sources (excepts random mentions in the old sagas) on how Vikings themselves handled encounters with sami people. If a farmers land was destroyed by nomadic people, how would the vikings react?

Anyone one out there with a theory/good read-ups on this matter?
