Native Americans on the Trail/Warpath

by ohioOSF

How did the Native Americans travel on foot? How heavy was their typical traveling load? What kind of "gear" did they take with them when they traveled? Also what would their pack consist of when on the warpath?

I've heard many accounts of how heavy a Roman soldier's pack was carrying his armor, cooking supplies etc etc. I was wondering what the Native Americans load was like in comparison.

Also does anyone know how much distance a group of Native Americans could cover in one day?

After a recent backpacking trip I was wondering if there were any insights I could pick up to travel lighter and farther from Native Americans.

Thanks!

You may want to rephrase this to ask something like "How did Native Americans in the New England Area travel on foot in the time period just after European contact". There is such great diversity in First Nations people that you are more likely to get a satisfactory answer if you are more specific in geographical region and time period. Besides, somebody traveling in the mountains would do so very differently than someone going through the desert. OK, I'll see myself out and let an actual historian answer the nitty gritty!
