For what it's worth, Latin American nations and the Latino community throughout the world celebrate Dia de la Raza ("Day of the Race," i.e. the Hispanic people) in lieu of Columbus Day. It was first celebrated in Argentina in 1917, and it grew to become an important holiday for celebrating Latino identity (the first Hispanic march on Washington occurred in October 12, 1996). In Venezuela, Hugo Chavez renamed it "The Day of Indigenous Resistance" in 2002, taking things a step further and giving things a revolutionary spin.
