I'm currently reading the book Who Murdered Chaucer? by Terry Jones and others. I'm curious about whether this is a widely held view or a crackpot hypothesis. According to Jones, Chaucer was very well-connected and in addition to being a popular author, also held some government positions. He apparently vanished from the record right around the time that Henry IV overthrew Richard II.

Could you add some context to this question? What leads you to believe that he may have been?
