I started becoming cusios about how and when Native Americans got involved after reading about the 1842 slave revolt in the Cherokee Nation
Who were the first Native Americans to trade/buy black slaves? I'm assuming they bought their slaves from white slave traders. Was it a common practice?
Estevanico (d. 1539) was enslaved by Coahuiltecan people in 1529. Most stories of Africans being enslaved by Native Americans in the 16th century wouldn't have been written down. Estevanico and his fellow Spanish captives escaped and his stories were recorded by Álvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca and Francisco Vázquez de Coronado.
