When did the 'Flying Car' become proxy for the future of scientific advancement for consumer products? When did it become the proxy for the unrealized expectations of futurism?

The general aspiration for something like a flying car, whether it be an autogyro or airplane flyable from a small, suburban field to a landing strip on top of a skyscraper has been around in the popular imagination since the 20’s. When, though, did it really leap from the pages of Popular Mechanics/Modern Mechanix to become an expectation of the general puplic?

When did people, by and large, realize that this just wasn’t going to happen? The 70’s? The 80’s?
