In my IB history class today we discussed Hitler's goal of capturing the Sudetenlend for a "unified Germany". We also looked at a map showing that there were pockets of ethnic Germans throughout the countries to the south. What was the plan? Did Hitler plan for these to become landlocked German satellite states? Did he mean to capture the entire region and convert/subdue the other ethnic groups (if so, could they be considered German)? Would those territories gained be part of Hitler's Lebenstraum? After asking my techer, he theorized that Hitler might have performed like Russia, capturing the territory and instilling nationalism rather than ethnic pride.
Hitler's plan for Eastern Europe was called Generalplan Ost - Master Plan East. It called for the expulsion, extermination or enslavement of everyone west of the Urals who wasn't an ethnic German, or who could be 'Germanified'. Those who were supposedly most similar to Germans, such as Lithuanians and Latvians, would be deported to Siberia, while others, such as Ukrainians or Poles would be starved or worked to death. The land thus vacated would be distributed to ethnic Germans to farm. Any semblance of nationalism from those enslaved would be stamped out harshly - the idea was to remove the concept of a Polish or Ukrainian identity, be it ethnic or national. This is quite unlike Soviet or Russian attempts at Russification, which could be more open to differing ethnic identities, while forcing a national identity on their subjects.
