What was the reason (if any) for certain seemingly random unit designations?

by blueblarg

So I've been researching the American army in World War II. I have a few questions about specific units:

6th Army group/12th Army group: What happened to the 1st-5th or 7th-11th Army groups? Why choose such random numbers?

Why is there no 20th Infantry Division?

Thanks for any help!

It's my understanding that the U.S. Army's first Special Forces group was named 10th Special Forces group specifically to confuse observers. That 10th group was the first US SFG is well documented. Unfortunately, I can't find a source for the intent behind that name. This happened in 1953, close enough to WWII that the same people and thought processes were in play. I can't speak to any of those other units you mentioned.
