Russia started in the area around Moscow. Between 1500 and 1700, Russia expanded eastward to the Pacific Ocean. The Russians were able to capture all that land because (a) no other country was willing to put up a fight for essentially frozen wasteland, and (b) the people already living on that land (the indigenous Siberians) were very similar to Native Americans and were thus easily conquered.
