Where did you hear this? Did it have any reference to specific works? I'm not aware of this at all, but Marx and Engels wrote a great deal, and had extensive preserved correspondences as well. If something lesser had been suppressed I would be surprised.

That said, even if Marx was categorically available, interpretation belonged wholly to the current powers that be. Only a small category of Marxist thought was ever allowed in the USSR at any given time.
