Who cleaned all the horse manure up off the streets?

According to one site, in 1893, 2.5 million pounds of horse manure filled NYC streets per day.

Yet the photos from that period typically show relatively clean streets.

Did someone collect the manure and use it for fertilizer?

According to another thread, 'Goungefermours' (gunge-farmers) were employed by 17th century London to remove waste and spoil and clean public areas. I am curious if that was a common solution.
