If I were alive in 1890, living in Gothenburg, Sweden, and wanted to travel to the Ural Mountains (such as Perm or Yekaterinburg) in Russia, how would I go about it? My guess is taking a boat and somehow continuing east along the Volga River, but perhaps there were railroads that would make the trip easier? Also, what kind of travel documents or passports were needed? Any information on this would be greatly appreciated, thank you.
Step One: Take the train from Gothenburg to Stockholm (This wikipedia article says that the railroad was completed in 1862)
Step Two: Take a boat to St. Petersburg (a direct route would be preferable, but connections through Revel (Tallinn) or Heslingfors (Helsinki) can also work.
Step Three: Utilize the Russian Railway system to travel from St. Petersburg to Nizhny Novgorod (through Moscow). According to this map from July 1st 1890, such a railroad existed.
Step Four: Take the ferry to Perm', and then the local train to Yekaterinburg. If you would refer to the same map as in the last step, Nizhny Novgorod and Perm' both have river ports available to passenger service. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the documents required for this. I would assume as a man in 1890 you could visit the Russia consul in Stockholm to find out more and apply for paperwork if necessary. I can't find any information on this, but they might have had representatives in Gothenburg or other Swedish cities as well.
