Before the industrialisation of producing cigarettes, was there a career for people to roll cigarettes for the rich, or any other group?
Most people smoked either pipe tobacco or cigars prior to the 20th century, cigarettes became widespread well after the Industrial Revolution. Cigars are almost always made by hand, even today. Factories for processing tobacco existed for a long time too. In the opera Carmen which was written in 1875 the main character initially worked at a tobacco factory.
