Coptic, the liturgical language of Coptic Christians (an Egyptian ethnoreligious group), is a direct descendant of the Ancient Egyptian language.

The Coptic writing system was developed as a way to write the Egyptian language using (mostly) Greek letters, and is still around today, though outside of the church nearly all Copts now use and speak Arabic.
