One of the main sources for Roman history in the second and third centuries is the Historia Augusta—which claims to be a collection of works by several third century historians, but is now thought to be a piece of historical fiction written about a century later. However, the unknown author evidently used a lot of reference works that have since been lost, so it’s assumed that the Historia contains a good deal of true and otherwise unknown information in spite of being fiction.
