What was it like to be an African-American in the south during the African-American Civil Rights era?

There's a great book titled "the warmth of other suns" that tells the story of several individuals who moved from the south to the north or west during or just before the Civil Rights era. Fantastic book. One part of the book tells of a Doctor who moved to California and had to sleep in his car because hotels wouldn't let him in. Once in California, he did get a job at a hospital, but tells of the misery of having to listen to other doctors talk about the restaurants they went to, places where he wasn't allowed to go.
