You'll see it referred to a lot as consumption. It was an extremely common cause of death until the 20th century when drug treatment became widely available. In the UK it killed 105 per 100,000 in 1914 but this fell to 8.8 by 1954. While most people probably didn't have it, most would have known someone who did.
