I've been a big fan of the Flashmanesque French Hussar General for a long while, but I've always found it hard to find sources about his pretty outlandish sounding adventures and his conversations with Napoleon.
Is this because they basically don't exist? In which case, where did the stories come from, did Lasalle use them to big up his character, or are most of the events around him real and just poorly sourced in English?
Sadly, there isn't anything that I have been able to come across in English on Lasalle. Everything I have come across is usually in books on French cavalry or French generals.
Here's one translation, it isn't much, but it's something.
"General Bonaparte, always prodigal of his kindness, has given me the command of the mounted troops of the 7th hussars, and the 22nd chasseurs. Here I am then, a little General! He often invites me to dinner, and always places me at his right hand. I have an infinite deal of trouble to form my new corps, which is in the most ruinous state you can possibly conceive,-- by dint of incessant exertions, however I hope to succeed to my honour."
