My understanding is that the Mamluk was modeled after Byzantine heavy cavalry such as the Athenatoi, Kataphraktoi, and Klibanaphoroi.

Did they ever encounter each other in pitched battles? How did they differ in tactics in those instances? How similar were they? Did they try any special tactics to fight each other to overcome their similarities or did they rely on other troops to help?
