And the mod team has made it clear time and time again that in their (and my) opinion no answer is better than a hundred wrong, or "questionable", answers. This is /r/askhistorians not /r/askreddit and it's where people go when they do not have the knowledge to 'judge for themselves' so we need a set of standards. If you can't provide a source when asked don't post. If you post something that is academically questionable you better provide some solid backup or be ready to be deleted.

There are plenty of other subreddits which have much looser regulations and allow more 'discussion' between those who heard something from a guy they knew one time; I suggest you go there if that's what you're looking for. However let me just say it is my experience that especially in places like /r/history and in defaults the "cool" and snarky answer is more popular than the correct one. I don't want this place to become a popularity contest of who can write a more compelling post I want it to be a place of accuracy first and foremost and I hope the mods align with that thought.

Don't give an inch I say. Don't give people who can't support their arguments or who can't cite their claims or who are here to spout some kind of polarizing politicized crap a voice. Once you bend a little for "popular questions" you start to bend everywhere else and that's just not something I want to see happen here. There is a reason there is such consistently great answers on this sub: because strict quality control only allows those to survive. Unfortunately, yes, that means some popular questions remain unanswered. It's a side effect I'll take over this becoming /r/askhighschoolerstheiropiniononhitler.

Lastly we just have the issue of pure practicality. You do realize these mods do it for free right? Like, in their free time for fun while also posting answers to questions? Like yes it was a choice but now you want them to spend even more man hours going through posts and marking them up or whatever? It's just asking far too much for a bunch of volunteers.

TL;DR: no. But there are several other subs with different moderation policies, so somewhere like /r/AskHistory or /r/AskReddit could be a better fit. /r/AskHistorians expects responses to be made by, well, historians (professional, trained, or amateur) who actually have some in-depth knowledge on the subject. So while we can't prevent non-experts from answering, we can remove non-expert comments.

As for the suggestion...

As mentioned elsewhere, it doesn't appear that mods can "mark" a comment, so if I'm not mistaken, this would really mean adding an assessment comment, which would double the comments in every thread. So, taking today's current comment graveyard, where there are now 2 visible comments and 93 removed, there would be 95 visible user comments, interleaved with 95 moderator assessments. Result:

• the thread would be unreadable

• substandard comments which are left visible result in more substandard comments. For example, a joke results in another, or a link to a video.. a link to blog is followed by a links to tumblr... a link is followed by reactions ("great read!" "I just bought it!"...) and more links ("relevant video clip!")... an incorrect answer is argued by several others... a caustic remark erupts into a flame war... and so on. And yes, these things really happen in this sub; luckily most readers don't have to see it.

• up/down votes will not float the quality answers to the top. Usually the first reasonable-looking answer collects a swarm of up-votes; by the time the first quality answer arrives, there are few new readers and even fewer that notice it at the bottom

• visible comments with assessments result in reaction comments, either agreeing or disagreeing with the assessment, criticizing or supporting the mods, questioning or defending the rules.. in short, even more off-topic comments for meta discussions that can easily overwhealm a thread

I'm not aware of a way to mark comments.

We can only flair threads (like your example here) or usernames (like me), we can't flair comments unfortunately.
