Is it maybe just a myth perpetuated through how beer seems important from an outsiders point of view? Sorry for crude wording but I hope my point comes across. I know a few German people and they all drink fairly often, so it's not just a stereotype. Right?

Beer is quite a central part of most Northwest European cultures; in fact the country with the highest per capita consumption of beer is the Czech Republic. Germany is not unique in being a beer-drinking nation, nor in taking pride in their beer.
