We learned in school that during the early years of the industrial revolution, factories were mostly filled with children and women. Our teacher claims that this was because women and children were cheaper to hire, but it would make more sense to me if it was because all men were at war.

So my question is, to be able to disprove my teacher, were there any wars being fought at the time that back up my theory? Or is my teacher correct?
