Quakers?

I'm fascinated by the Quakers. I wish to know more about their religion and how they function within a society they were found in.

I'm also only in high school, So I honestly don't know that much. Within my class of American History, it seems like the Quakers were the hippies of colonial America, that's how i perceive them as.

I did do a little research on them and found out that their official title is " Religious Society of Friends" Which i happen to find real badass!

I just want to understand the Quakers (who apparently got that name from 'quaking' while they prayed) and to see if they really are as badass as i deem them to be.

Read a biography of George Fox (1624-1691), who founded the movement. He grew up in the heyday of English Puritanism and was one of many men who began teaching an "uncompromised, pure gospel" at the time which can often sound radical to us.

Fascinating things about Quakers:

  • because of Jesus' words on the topic, they refused to take oaths.
  • they also refused to show any of the traditional outward signs of respect and many were jailed for keeping their hats on before judges.
  • some Quakers began to preach naked as a sign (in order to illustrate the radical equality of mankind in the eyes of God).
