I've often wondered why it is that many people can recall from memory the names of many Greek gods, and their histories and myths, but very few people know the same amount about Roman gods.
Sure, people might know Jupiter, Mars and Venus, but only really the names.
How is it that despite the Romans having a far more prolonged, direct exposure to many more people, the Greek gods are so much better known?
Would a better question be: Why was the influence of the Greek Gods so much longer lasting than that of the Romans?
As a followup, were the Romans as devout as the Greeks? Or did they think of their gods as more of an homage to the Greek ones?
A good idea as of why could simply be for the fact that Greek myths are portrayed more in the media which has made us more aware.
For example, there has been many films throughout the 20th-21st century about the Odysseus, Jason and the Argonauts, Trojan war and so on. The majority make a large point out of the Greek Gods so therefore the names have stuck more with us.
Cupid was a Roman God and is someone again who is widely used in media and known to the general population, but I doubt Eros is known by as many. I don't exactly know how this come about, but it's something that is definitely happening.
