There was a pot of skin cream found a few years back on a Roman site in London - analysis showed it was mostly animal fat thickened with a starch, with added tin oxyde to give it a white color. No medicinal or herbal compenent was detected.

However, with a sample size of one, it is hard to say just how common or representative this specimen was...
