Book recommendation(s): Post-war Britain / 1970s Britain history books

by [deleted]

Sexual intercourse began

In nineteen sixty-three

(which was rather late for me) --

Between the end of the "Chatterley" ban

And the Beatles' first LP.

Does anyone have any good books to read on post-war Britain, and the transition from staid, conservative, war rationing to swinging Sixties and the Beatles?

I know the above is a stereotypical view of what happened, but that is why I want to read some books on post-war British history -- 1945-late 1960s (or so) time period.

If anyone has any other books on the history of Britain on the winter of discontent (1978, I think?) and the miners' strike, I would be very interested.

I am looking principally for books focused on social history. I am not a historian by training (accountant) and I don't know anything about the history of the UK other than what they teach in American high schools.

Thanks!

One recommendation for books about the miner's strike is The Enemy Within: The Secret War Against the Miners (Seumas Milne)

It's about the attacks the Thatcher government launched -- using the resources of MI5, Special Branch, even the CIA -- against NUM leaders Arthur Scargill and Peter Heathfield in efforts to discredit them, allegations that they had embezzled miner's hardship funds to pay off their mortgages that were completely unfounded.
