I was reading about the discovery of King Tut's tomb on Wikipedia and when it describes them first coming across the tomb it says "He cleared the doorway and made his way down a passageway that had been cleared by robbers. It was then that Howard Carter made a hole in the door, struck a match, and after discovering that the air had oxygen inside, went in."

Combustion relies on oxygen, so if the flame went out it might indicate that other, heavier gasses had settled in the tomb over the years and displaced the oxygen.
