What are some good sources for US involvement in the drug trade?

by emarete

I had a conversation with my daughter yesterday about hypocrisy and propaganda, and I realized I couldn't discuss the US government's position on drugs without sounding like a crazy person. I'm not entirely sure where I've learned the "facts" that I kinda sorta know.

I have no patience for conspiracy theorists, so I'm not sure where to begin. Much as I love documentaries, I would prefer to have written works for reference. Help?

The typical book recommended on this topic is Gary Webb's The Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion. There's some controversy over some of the claims in the book, of which I'm still not too certain about. Instead of Webb's book, I'd suggest these two:

Alfred W. McCoy, The Politics of Heroin: CIA Complicity in the Global Drug Trade.

Suzanna Reiss, We Sell Drugs: The Alchemy of US Empire
