The main irritant is the Yasukuni Shrine. Yes, it is a memorial for all of Japan's war dead, and yes, the IMTFE court which convicted the Japanese war criminals of WWII was flawed. But the fact is that the atrocities of Japan are well known in the rest of East Asia, and every Japanese Prime Minister goes to venerate a group that includes their perpetrators. This makes their apologies seem insincere.
