The most famous examples would probably be the Tiger Economies eg. South Korea, Taiwan, Singapore etc, but it would be helpful if you defined what you mean by 'almost nothing'. Ireland, for instance, went from being one of the poorest countries in Western Europe to one of the richest during the 90s/00s, but Ireland wasn't exactly a third world country by then.
