There is a scene in the film Fury where a few Germans are seen hanging from light posts with signs around their neck that explain their death as punishment for cowardice. One victim was even a young girl. Shortly after that an old man tells Brad Pitt's character where the remaining Nazis are at and immediately after pointing out their hiding spot he is shot in the head by a German soldier.
How accurate was this to what happened as the Allies got deeper and deeper into German territory?
In "The End" by Ian Kershaw it tells of accounts towards the end of the war where civilians were executed by not only the military but by other diehards. People could be killed for speaking aloud wishing that the war would end. Other activities such as hanging white sheets outside your home (showing that you wouldn't resist) could get you executed. Towards the end most civilians wished for the war to end (Hitler's popularity had crashed since the Allied bombing campaigns intensified in 1944) and lived in fear of not only being killed by the Allies (bombings or more direct by the Soviets) but by their own side if they failed to show the proper amount of fanaticism.
