As a health precaution in the first half of the 20th century, were signs posted outside residences notifying the public of small pox contamination?

After a conservation with my 88 year old grandma she mentioned remembering signs posted outside houses in the Midwest with the words "small pox". Is there any truth to this? Thanks!
