I was in a classroom today learning about the city of Ur, and a student noticed that most of the buildings started with an "e" like E-nun-mah and what not. Neither the teacher nor I could tell them what that meant. So I'm just curious if there is a reason why they start with an e or was it just the important buildings?
"E" means "house" in Sumerian and is commonly at the beginnings both of names for types of rooms or buildings in Sumerian (e2-gal, for example, means "palace") and names of temples and in some cases palaces. Other examples of this naming convention include E-abzu("Abzu house"), the temple of Ea/Enki in Eridu and Ekur("Mountain house"), the temple of Enlil in Nippur.
