Certainly a lot of people who claim to be believers throughout history have been atheists, that must be the case. You don't need to be highly educated to see that the church stories don't make much sense, in the same way that a child can figure out that santa isn't real. Didn't some of the American "founding fathers" criticize religion openly? I'm not a historian btw and don't have that much knowledge about the subject.
