The US was involved in dozens of proxy wars throughout the Cold War but none of them escalated to full US military engagements. What was different about Vietnam? Why was it special?
Vietnam was not a "full military engagement" in the category of WW I or WW II. It was a major military engagement, but I would certainly put Korea in the same category as Vietnam, and probably also Desert Storm.
