I read that the eighty monks of Canterbury Cathedral each struck him with a rod three times, and that each of the Bishops and Abbots struck him five times with a rod. This sounds like a very grim scene, unless it was a light tap. Is there any record of how hard they struck him, or was this a common enough practice that we have a good idea of how hard they struck him?
