You are describing a Hologram. They were invented in 1940s by Nobel Laureate (1971), Dennis Gabor, patented 1947. but holographic photography was not practical until the development of lasers in the 1960s. They are not just still projections. A recording can be projected like a film which gives the impression of a solid figure walking about and apparently interacting with real items. A readily accessible example may be at your local museum as they are sometimes used to have a recorded figure give a presentation about museum exhibits.
