While the Cuban-American population significantly predates the revolution that swept the Castros the power, a large proportion of the population here now emigrated at about that time and is made up of those who opposed Castro or did poorly or could expect to do poorly under his regime, along with their descendants. In blunt language: Cuban-Americans are largely the losing side in the civil war that Castro won. These are people who lost significant property, in many cases, either to the government or in fleeing the government. There were also executions by the regime, including after they'd seized power. Revolution and execution weren't altogether novel in terms of Cuban history at that point, but in this case a large part of one social and political class migrated, in the course of a few years, to a city about 90 miles away from their old country. On top of all that, this happened during the Cold War, and as Castro ended up aligned with the Soviets, the dislike that the refugees felt ended up melding with anti-communist sentiment. This resulted in operations such as the Bay of Pigs, which was a U.S.-government backed attempt by exiles to overthrow Castro through an invasion. (And if that sounds bizarre, by the standards of the times, it really wasn't. Castro had started his revolution by landing on the eastern end of the island in the boat Granma, which he had bought from an America (so yes, it really does mean Granma), with a handful of men. He launched from Mexico, where he'd been in exile after being let out of prison, where he'd been serving a sentence for an earlier uprising. An urban uprising in Santiago was supposed to be timed to coincide with his landing, but the boat was late, the authorities were waiting for him and the whole thing was a disaster. He and maybe a dozen men made it up into the mountains, form which they launched their revolution, starting with things such as attacks on what were, essentially, small, remote police stations.)
