Eastern Bloc nations had sports cars like the ZIL-112 Sports and the Melkus RS -1000. Who would be the type of people driving these ? Didn't the fact they existed stick out like a sore thumb in those countries?

I hope I'm not hijacking your question, but upon doing some research into these cars I discovered that the ZIL set several Soviet track records. What was motorsport like behind the Iron Curtain? I would be especially interested in any information prior to the reintroduction of the Hungarian Gran Prix in 1986.
