When does the concept of heroism really end?

Initial soldiers in WWI still believed in the classical concept of a hero, like Achilles. Is it immediately after WWI that this concept got challenged? Did this concept survive WWII in any way? Did Hitler or other contemporary leaders also invoke this feeling in their speeches?

Is hero really the concept involved with Achilles? Or, is it more like the concept of "Champion?"

I may be using a more contemporary concept of hero. Was the idea of a hero more closely related to that of champion then?
