There's very little evidence supporting any serious Japanese nuclear program during WWII. They heavily invested in chemical warfare, but that research was mostly focused in China during, and right before, the war. The Japanese lacked access to many of the natural resources (esp. Uranium) to build the atomic bomb and focused their efforts elsewhere.
