Native American religions as a rule don't proselytize, especially not among non-Native Americans. Most religions are tribally specific. Some ceremonies, such as the Sun Dance, have been shared from one tribe to another over time. Many pan-tribal religions emerged as a response to European and European-American encroachment and invasion; however, these typically call for a rejection of European ways and a return to aboriginal cultural practices. They include:

• the Handsome Lake Religion among the Six Nations
• Kuksu religion among California tribes
• Indian Shaker Church among Plateau and Northwest Coastal peoples
• Faw Faw religion among Otoe, Missouia, and Osage peoples
• the Washat or Seven Drum Religion among Plateau tribes
• and most famously, the Ghost Dance religion, originating with the Paiute prophet Wovoka (1856–1932), spreading among numerous Western tribes, and still being practiced by the Caddo today.

Today the largest pan-Indian religion is the Native American Church, which uses peyote as its primary sacrament. Although some non-Native people participate in Native American Church meetings, it is illegal in the US for non-Native people to partake of peyote, so no proselytizing.

Typically Native Americans struggle to keep non-Natives out of their ceremonies. For instance, in 2003 an agreement among several Northern Plains tribes declared that non-Native people are not welcome to participate in Sun Dances.
