How historically accurate is this representation of fighting in a testudo formation? (taken from the game Ryse: Son of Rome)

The Testudo was used to approach archers, such as when you stormed a tower or wall. The video shows the soldiers dropping their shields between volleys, which wouldn't have happened. You kept the formation together until you were close enough to use your sword, partly because the archers would be firing at different times.
