I'm an 18 year old, currently preparing to jump into the 2nd year of a Masters in History. I live in Scotland so it's probably important to add that I don't have to pay for tuition or anything unless I'm in higher education for more than 5 years.
Right now I'm really excited to start my course, I've always loved history but I'd say I'm more adept at literature/English. I'm not thinking about changing course, because as I said, I have a real passion for history - but seeing how difficult it is to get a decent job in the field of history that isn't draining financially is disheartening. My mother and many of her friends are really eager for me to continue on to do a PHD in History, despite the downfalls in the process. After consideration, I figured I should go get a law degree after my masters but I wanted to know how many of you have dealt with your degrees after education.
Does law seem like a good route? Is it even possible? What other professions do you suggest?
PhD student here. If you have any doubts about doing a PhD, don't do it. Grad school can be a dark pit of misery and despair. The only reason to do it is because you can't live without trying. I know things go faster in the UK than the States, but it takes so much emotional energy even in the UK (I did an MA there), and there's no sure job when you finish.
This is the same advice I give to any undergrads that ask me about grad school.
