I'm talking about before the 1900s. Maybe from the cultures that practice Shamanism? I would like to know how they would describe the experience as opposed to someone in modern day.
Absolutely; one of the earlier descriptions is provided by Herodotus in his Histories. He goes to extensive lengths in describing collective use of cannabis by the Scythians in large-scale ritualised bulk burnings and the euphoric stupor thus generated.
Another instance is the Pythis at the Delphic oracle, as described by Herodotus (Histories) and Plutarch (Moralia). In this case, the intoxicant would appear to be geothermal exhalaisons from local fractures, possibly bearing ethylene and/or benzene and perhaps other gases, although the issue is far from consensual.
