'Lucky' Luciano was released, it is thought, to help facilitate the Mafia providing intelligence for the invasion, though I've not seen a concrete source on this. The commutation of sentencing happened at the right time though. It is mentioned as unconfirmed in one of John Dickie's histories of the mafia.
