I got the book for my father for Christmas last year and I'm also very interested in religious history, so I thought I'd come to you guys to get a gauge of if the book is worth the read, well-written, historically accurate, etc.
I was able to find this review by Jim Cullen on the History News Network but was hoping to find more info and insight into the book.
The general consensus is that Aslan is not presenting any new findings nor is he pushing the edge of scholarship. To be fair to Aslan, his audience is not really other academics or specialists, but laymen. However, there is an agreement that Aslan's book is fundamentally sound and accessible, something that cannot be said for some academics' writing. As such, his book is a very good starting place. Aslan's row with Fox News certainly put him in the spotlight and his book has not suffered from the attention he has gotten. The Chronicle of Higher Education has a good write-up on how the scholarly community has responded to both Aslan and the controversy.
