When Europe was formed of multiple Kingdoms and royalties, if a Prince and Princess were married to each other for political reasons rather then romantic reasons were they allowed to sleep with other lovers or were they held to the 'beliefs' of marriage?

Typically we see that male royalty slept with whomever they wanted, whenever they wanted. French and English kings had mistresses openly, with French mistresses becoming prominent society ladies, even if of low birth, helping to dictate fashion and conversation during their time. Female royalty was generally held to be faithful to their man, though a few, especially if ruling in their own right, may have had lovers.
