The Chinese text 五十二病方 (lit. 52 treatments for disease) recommended that for some conditions, like boils, one should lance and cauterize. This basically means that they burst the boil and immediately burned it. Needless to say this was incredibly painful. However, cauterization was thought to prevent wounds from getting infected. I do not recommend doing this at home.
